5 to 14 Assessment

5 to 14 assessment

As they work through the 5 to 14 curriculum, pupils' attainment is assessed at five or six levels: A (lowest) to E or F (highest). Teachers regularly assess their pupils performance to see how they are progressing through the levels.

The national assessment system is set out in Circular No 2, June 2005: Assessment and Reporting 3-14.

Assessment is for Learning (AifL) is an improved approach to assessment. It gives pupils, parents and teachers better and clearer feedback on how individual pupils are getting on and what they can do to improve and develop in the future. More meaningful feedback to pupils leads to improved attainment.

All schools will be part of AifL by 2007 enabling:

  • a clear focus on assessment to support pupils' learning
  • a simplified system and support for teachers
  • clearer information for parents

More information is available on the Assessment is for Learning section of the Learning and Teaching Scotland website.

The Scottish Survey of Achievement (SSA) is the annual national survey which provides information on pupils' performance from 5 to 14. More information, and the results of the first survey can be found in the Attainment section.
