Independent schools
Parents have a legal responsibility to ensure their children are educated. The vast majority of parents choose to fulfil this responsibility by sending their children to a state school but some choose to send them to a registered independent school (some also choose to educate their children at home).
Ministers appoint a Registrar of Independent Schools and it is their duty to keep a public Register of Independent Schools in Scotland.
The Register contains a range of information, including the address and contact details of school, the current optimum rolls and whether boarding facilities are provided.

The Executive has issued Guidance Notes for new and existing independent schools.
