Free fresh fruit

The free fruit in schools initiative provides one portion of fruit, three times per week during the school term, to every pupil in primaries 1 and 2 in local authority managed schools.

This initiative is intended to offer a natural progression for children from pre-school education who in many instances are used to having fruit at nursery.

By targeting the youngest children where eating fruit is most likely to be habit forming will be more likely to bring the greatest health gain in the long term.

Under the terms of the concordat with local government it will be for local authorities to determine how to take this forward locally.
