School closures taken under the 2010 Act

East Renfrewshire Council

The Council took the decision on 15 March 2012 to discontinue the pre-school facility for 3-5 year olds within Glen Family Centre. As is required under the terms of Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010, a 3 week period must be allowed from the date to allow for anyone to make a representation to Ministers requesting that the decision is or is not called into them. That period expires on 4 April 2012.

A maximum of a further 3 week period is then allowed for Ministers to consider the details of consultation documents and representations and reach a decision on whether or not to call in the closure decision for further investigation. That period expires on 25 April 2012.

East Renfrewshire Council cannot implement the closure decision (either in full or in part) until Ministers have reached a final decision on the case.

The Scottish Government is aware that there are a number of components within this consultation, for example to relocate nursery class spaces from Giffnock Primary.  Under the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010, the Scottish Ministers only have a role with regard to closures, not relocations.  Any representations to Ministers requesting that they call in / do not call in East Renfrewshire's decision should relate only to the discontinuance of pre-school education for 3-5 year olds at Glen Family Centre.
