A Sustainable School Estate
In September 2009 the Scottish Government and COSLA jointly published the new School Estate Strategy Building Better Schools: Investing in Scotland's Future.
The new Strategy includes a strong, joint commitment from local and Scottish Government to developing a more sustainable school estate, which is set out in the following terms:
"A sustainable school estate whose design, construction and operation is environmentally and energy efficient; contributes directly to delivering the year-on-year reductions in greenhouse gas emissions introduced by the Climate Change (Scotland) Act, which is resilient to the impact of climate change and which leads by example in matters of environmental performance."
Achieving this will require a focus on all schools, not just those which are going to be rebuilt or substantially refurbished, and a focus on the entirety of the school estate - the grounds as well as the buildings. Further, it will require action not just from local authorities who are responsible for the management of the school estate but also from all those involved in designing, building and maintaining schools and from staff, pupils, parents and community groups who make use of the school estate.
This sustainable school estate 'knowledge base' brings together relevant Scottish Government policies, legislation, advice, guidance and good practice. The information is organised in three main sections - Planning, Design and Construction and Use, which broadly correlate to the various project work stages. Links to relevant resources and other sources of information are also provided.
This portal, which was developed with advice and guidance from a reference group comprising of representatives from local authorities, SUST and Archial Sustainable Futures, will ensure information about relevant Scottish Government policies, advice and guidance are in one place. The portal will expand as further work is completed.
