Building Excellence - Exploring the implications of Curriculum for Excellence for school buildings
The Scottish Government ran a programme of events during 2007 to explore the implications of Curriculum for Excellence for the design of new or refurbished schools and for the design and use of space in existing schools.
The main messages from the programme so far are captured in the Building Excellence publication which is a resource for school managers, teachers and designers.
Also now published is Senses of Place: Building Excellence, the toolkit and outcomes from The Lighthouse project (see below).
To order a hard copy of these publications or for further information about the Building Excellence programme in general, please e-mail the school estate team.

Senses of Place: Building Excellence - throughout 2007
In addition to the Building Excellence events, the Scottish Government commissioned The Lighthouse, Scotland's Centre for Architecture, Design and the City, to manage 'Senses of Place: Building Excellence'.
This project sought to develop aspirations for the design of school buildings and their grounds in the context of Curriculum for Excellence. Working with five local authorities, The Lighthouse facilitated workshops with school pupils, teachers, members of the community and local authority representatives and the resultant material has been developed into design briefs. Five design firms then designed interpretations of these briefs for an exhibition which is running in The Lighthouse from 21 February until 13 April 2008. An accompanying publication details the process involved in managing effective participatory consultation with school users.
