Abbey

Abbey Primary, North Ayrshire

The project was selected as a case study because it illustrates how a new extension can be used to successfully create a coherent environment from a number of previously disparate elements. The design overcomes the constraints of the existing building and addresses the concerns of the Council's maintenance staff who had a preference for the use of durable, low maintenance materials.

Achahoish

Achahoish Primary, Argyll & Bute

The main reason for including this school as a case study is the way in which the building addresses the modern teaching needs in a rural location with a small school roll of only 30 pupils. The ideas used are equally applicable to other smaller or slightly larger situations. The external design fits with other buildings in this area and internally offers great flexibility.

Ardnamurchan High, Highland

The school is included as an example of what can be achieved with sufficient community and end user consultation and by creating a clear understanding of what is and what is not possible within cost constraints. The project also demonstrates the advantages of working with the community to enhance the outcome.

Bathgate

Bathgate Early Years Centre, West Lothian

A key feature of this case study was the selection of durable materials to minimise the effects of graffiti and vandalism, which had been a problem in the area. The Council was concerned that the building should be as durable and 'vandal proof' as possible, without compromising the design or the appearance of the building. This approach has been successful and the building, although simple, is sensitively executed and provides a pleasant and secure environment both inside and out for both children and staff.

Bunessan

Bunessan Primary, Argyll & Bute

This project was chosen as a case study to illustrate the extension to the school as a contemporary reinterpretation of the original Victorian building. It was also chosen as a good example of the provision of community facilities.

Carlibar

Carlibar Primary/Community Campus, East Renfrewshire

This case study is included as an example of the benefits that can be derived from using exemplar designs within a PPP contract.

Chatelherault

Chatelherault Primary, South Lanarkshire

This school was selected as a case study as it is located at the heart of a housing development and is used by the community. It builds upon lessons learned from the construction of earlier, successful primary schools in the same Council area.

Dalkeith

Dalkeith Community Campus, Midlothian

The project is included as a successful example of the bringing together of three schools on a single site, which operate independently within what is essentially a single building. The key benefits are that the three schools and the local community now have combined, programmed access to key facilities, such as state of the art sports facilities (indoor and out), library, theatre and associated changing and dressing rooms.

Dalry
Dalry Primary, North Ayrshire

The school is included as a case study as the design solution provides an innovative approach to internal spaces, and the project also demonstrates the value of extensive consultation with users during the development of the design brief.

Deanburn

Deanburn Primary, Falkirk

The building is included as a case study as it has become an icon for Falkirk Council's design approach to protecting the environment by using sustainable methods and construction materials.

case study image
Denholm Primary, Scottish Borders

This project is included as a case study as a very unique project, given the short timeframe involved from the fire to the building opening, the distinct design which blends with the rural setting and the importance of the school at the heart of the local community.

case study image
Galston Primary, East Ayrshire

The project has been selected as a case study because it incorporates a significant number of alternative energy and "green" technologies. The building is considered to be a leading example of a "green school" and includes a wind turbine, photo voltaic cells, a ground source heat pump and grey water recycling.

Gullane

Gullane Primary, East Lothian

Key features of this project are attention to detail and the integration of sustainable, healthy materials as standard. Although modest in scale, this project is well designed and beautifully executed.

Hazelwood
Hazelwood School, Glasgow

The school is included as a case study as an innovative building that responds well to the diverse needs of the pupils.

case study image
Inverclyde Academy, Inverclyde

The school is included as a case study due to its many sustainable and distinctive features and the extensive consultation process carried out by the authority and design team which undoubtedly added value to the final design.

Keppoch
Keppoch Campus, Glasgow

The project is included as a case study as a flagship campus, known nationally as an excellent example of successful co-location.

Mayfield

Mayfield Primary, North Ayrshire

This school is included as a case study because of the way in which the school and the Council have taken the opportunity presented when building a new school to address a number of the previous problems.

case study image

Meldrum Academy, Aberdeenshire

This case study is included as an example of the successful integration of a large new school into a small community. The main challenge for the Head Teacher and staff was to establish a school ethos and create a school identity.

Moorfoot Primary

Moorfoot Primary, Midlothian

The school has been chosen as a case study, as it is an excellent example of an amalgamated school with very good external spaces that respond well to its rural setting.

Nesting

Nesting Primary, Shetland

This case study illustrates the issues in designing a school for a particularly harsh environment. The Council's aim was to build a school for today and for the future that would provide a good environment for learning and teaching with low running costs in terms of energy use.

case study image
Newark Primary, Inverclyde

The school has been included as a case study as an excellent example of sustainable design and the commitment to utilise extensive user consultation throughout the design/build process.

Raploch Campus

Raploch Campus, Stirling

The project is included as a case study as it is an excellent example of a community inclusive education campus embracing a considerable range of facilities.

case study image
Sanderson's Wynd Primary, East Lothian

Sanderson's Wynd has been chosen as a case study as an excellent new build primary school incorporating a number of sustainable design features also facilitating extensive community use. The school also boasts excellent outdoor spaces.

case study image

St Andrew's Primary, Midlothian

This school demonstrates the high quality of flexibility, design, facilities and environment that can be achieved in a small single stream primary.

case study image

St Andrew's High, North Lanarkshire

This case study is included as an example of the excellent provision of facilities such as the sports centre, dance studio and grass and all weather pitches which are being used extensively by pupils, staff and community groups on a daily basis.

St Bride's

St Bride's Primary, South Lanarkshire

This school was selected as a case study as it is an early example of a number of schools built by South Lanarkshire as part of a 'Partnering Agreement' between the Council and the same architect and main contractor team. The Council's architecture team worked closely with the delivery team and the school users, and this has provided a successful basis for the development of a number of subsequent schools.

St Peter's

St Peter's Primary, Edinburgh City

The school was selected as a case study because it is a successful, well designed and attractive building, designed specifically to deal with the constraints of a difficult site and the needs of its users.

St Thomas

St Thomas of Aquin's, Edinburgh City

The building is included as a case study because it provides an example of a building that has 'civic presence' set within its historic urban context. In addition, the project incorporated a number of 'loose-fit' strategies to ensure the building will be a long-term asset, and one which will accommodate change.

St Thomas

Stoneyhill Primary, East Lothian

The project was chosen as a case study as it demonstrates how the need to substantially extend a fairly new school can be turned to the advantage of the pupils - in this case it created a wing that catered better for the needs of senior primary school pupils within a school that was previously open plan, providing them with a quieter, class-room based arrangement at the other end of the school.

Strathesk Primary

Strathesk Primary, Midlothian

The project has been included as a case study as a good example of a two stream school built in an urban setting.

Williamwood

Williamwood High, East Renfrewshire

This case study is included as an example of the benefits that can be derived from using exemplar designs within a PPP contract in a relocated secondary school. The approach used here has been applied throughout East Renfrewshire and involved specialists in the development of designs that examined key issues.

East Lothian

Windygoul Primary, East Lothian

The project has been chosen as a case study as an excellent example of a new build primary school which incorporates a number of sustainable design features.
