
Shetland comprises a remote archipelago of islands with a land mass of around 1,466 square kilometres, located north of the north coast of Scotland. The islands have a population of around 21,880, nearly half of which is located in the only town, Lerwick. There are 41 publicly funded schools, including 32 primaries and 9 secondaries. 3,441 pupils attend these schools, including 1,849 primary pupils and 1,592 secondary pupils.
