
The Western Isles mark the north west frontier of Scotland. With a total land area of 3,071 square kilometres, the islands measure 210km in length from the Butt of Lewis in the north to the small uninhabited islands of the south and are 60km at their widest point and 799m at their highest peak. The population of the Western Isles is 26,350. There are 49 publicly funded schools, including 38 primaries and 11 secondaries.3,833 pupils attend these schools, including 1,963 primary pupils and 1,870 secondary pupils.
