General Introduction to Project
A proposed major housing development for Windygoul prompted the need for a review of Tranent's catchment area. This concluded that a new primary school (Windygoul PS) should be constructed south of the town and that Tranent's existing catchment area should be redrawn accordingly. Following a full option appraisal, it was decided to build a new school at Sanderson's Wynd to replace the existing dilapidated, flat-roofed, two-storey Tranent Primary, and the nursery housed in temporary units.
Like Windygoul PS (also included as a case study), Sanderson's Wynd has been chosen as a case study as an excellent new build primary school incorporating a number of sustainable design features also facilitating extensive community use. The school also boasts excellent outdoor spaces.
The school is designed to accommodate an initial roll of up to 381 pupils, with 12 classrooms and nursery accommodation for 60 am/pm pupils. The facilities also include an integrated Additional Support for Learning unit ('the Hub'), a centre for Children 1st organisation and community youth facilities.
