Introduction

School EducationEducation in Scotland has always enjoyed a high status and most of the key principles and values on which it is built are long established. The provision of free, compulsory education for all within a specified age group (currently 5-16) is fundamental.

Since devolution in 1999, new legislation dealing with education is a matter for the Scottish Parliament and the Standards in Scotland's Schools etc Act 2000 gave every child in Scotland a right to education for the first time.
