Mark

Mark, a parentally dependant student studying in Scotland

Mark is 19 and has just completed a National Qualification (NQ) in Media Studies at his local college and is now considering staying on to study for an Higher National Diploma (HND) in Media and Communication. He would like to know if there will be any difference in the funding he will receive.

Whilst studying for his NQ Mark was a Further Education student. His course fees were paid and he received a means-tested bursary, plus study related costs and travel expenses. He was also given help by the college from their Discretionary Fund. Mark lived with his parents whilst he studied for his NQ but is now thinking of sharing a flat with friends when he does his HND.

Once he starts his HND he will become a full-time, parentally-dependant Higher Education student:

  • he will still get his course fees paid
  • he will receive a student loan and a Young Student's Bursary, based on his parents' income
  • as his parents' income is £30,000 he will receive bursary and student loan support totalling £3,761
  • the loan covers a standard 30 week course. If the course is more than 30 weeks and three days he will get extra funding.

He can also claim travel expenses from SAAS and, if he has financial difficulties, can ask for help from the college's Discretionary Fund.
