Further Education Students

Further Education courses are those which are not taught in a school and are below Higher National Certificate (HNC) level. They cover levels 1-6 on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) and include:

  • academic courses up to Higher level;
  • courses that do not lead to formal qualifications (such as independent living skills courses);
  • basic skills courses, such as literacy and numeracy; and
  • work-related courses, such as Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs)

If you are a full-time student in Further Education you will not have to pay tuition fees as long as you meet certain residency conditions. If you are not sure whether you meet these conditions, check with the college where you have chosen to study.

Funding support for living costs is through means-tested discretionary grants, but these are not guaranteed to all eligible applicants. Further Education funding is administered by Scotland's colleges. A list of college bursary officer contacts is available from learndirect scotland.
