HOW ARE MY CHARGES SET

Most domestic and non-domestic customers receive and pay for four services:

- the supply of drinking water;

- the removal and treatment of sewage;

- the removal and treatment of drainage of private areas such as roofs and car parks (known as surface drainage), and;

- the removal and treatment of drainage from public areas such as roads (known as roads or highway drainage).

Some non-domestic customers also dispose of trade effluent through the sewerage system and pay for this service separately.

The price limits that Scottish Water can set are determined through a process called the Strategic Review of Charges. The final determination of the last Review was published in November 2005 and set price limits for 2006/07 to 2009/10. Each year, Scottish Water submits a detailed charging statement to the Water Industry Commission for approval. This must be within the price limits set out in the Commission's final determination of charges. Both, Scottish Water's detailed charging statement and the price limits must be consistent with the Principles of Charging Statement issued by Scottish Ministers.

Information about charges, including about the Principles of Charging Statement, household charges, non-household charges and retail competition in the non-household sector can be found in the links below.

Details on the process for setting prices beyond 2010 can be found here.
