Retailing in Scotland

The Scottish Government welcomes supermarkets' commitment to Scotland and Scottish food and drink.

Retail sales figures for Scottish produce both in Scotland and the UK demonstrate that increasingly supermarkets are seeking to stock and promote Scottish lines. Scotland's retailers, producers and processors are to be congratulated for the excellent progress to date. The Scottish Government wishes to work with retailers to build on this progress and take forward ambitions for Scotland's food and drink, to achieve the primary purpose of sustainable economic growth. The Scottish Government is delighted that major retailers have expressed their commitment to working in partnership to drive this forward.

Retailers' Charter

We, the undersigned retailers, commit to playing our part in taking forward the national food and drink policy to lead Scotland towards a better food culture that thrives on quality, health, wellbeing and environmental sustainability. In particular:

1. We will work in partnership with Scotland's food and drink producers and suppliers, and play our role in ensuring food security for Scotland's people.

2. We will work with Scotland Food and Drink and our supply chain partners to ensure there is appropriate information for consumers to help them choose Scottish products

3. We will provide customers with clear information and a range of products to enable them to choose an affordable, healthy diet; and will promote food and alcohol responsibly.

4. We will meet consumer demand to ensure foods that have been produced in compliance with high animal welfare and environmental standards.

5. We will help Scotland reduce its environmental impact, by contributing to meeting its climate change targets and moving towards a zero waste society, including reducing and managing food waste.

Explanatory note: this Charter sets the agenda for collaborative work around the national food and drink policy and other matters through the Retailers' Forum. In agreeing to this Charter, the Scottish Government recognises the benefits of competition between retailers and that retailer support for the Charter does not necessarily equate to support for all aspects of the national food and drink policy.
