burger and chipsRoddy Mungall says: We need to get smart about all this and rather than reaching a point where we tell people that this, that or the next thing is bad for us, it would be better to take a positive approach and take about a proportionate approach. By that I mean that we need to enable people to strike a balance and to make good choices about food. Even junk food is food, but it really does depend whether or not it dominates or is, as I would regard it, a treat.

I work in kilwinning and at lunchtime I see the children coming from the chip shop with chips and cheese or sauce. I lived in America in the 1980s and I saw children becoming very over weight and eating lots of McDonalds and KFC or Pizza Hut. I see that happening even more here now. I am all for having a treat but not every day. I choose to spend my money on other things more important. If everyone was to count up how much money was spent in chip shops or other fast food outlets I think they would be shocked how much they could save if they took their lunch to school or work. Also everyone would know what they are eating then and not be at the mercy of other people or compamies who are trying to make money out of them, putting ingredients in the food that are unhealthy. I also think that people just eat food and do not think what they are putting in their bodies and the effect of the food they are eating. Call me an old fuddy duddy but there is nothing better that a good bowl of home made soup and sandwich that you have made yourself. Maybe if there was more money put into education to teach people to cook healthy (and I do not mean just children there are adults out there who do not know how to cook) then peoples health would improve.

This issue will resolve when people stop calling junk food/ fast food a TREAT!!!!!! As our kids grow up they learn that TREATS are something special, something one one works for, something they get if they are good. As they start to be able to afford their own TREATS they realise how cheap the junk food treat is, instant comfort based on a childhood perception. And so we watch the nation eating TREATS on a daily basis. and the result......
