Energy Consents - Initial Enquiries

tree cuttingInitial enquiries about building and operating power stations and installing overhead power lines, should be made to Scottish Ministers. Enquiries are considered by Scottish Ministers where they are:

  • in excess of 50 megawatts (MW) for onshore wind farms and power stations that are not wholly or mainly driven by water (such as coal/gas fired or nuclear plant);
  • in excess of 1 MW for offshore wind farms and generating stations wholly or mainly driven by water (such as hydroelectric, wave or tidal generating stations); and
  • with certain exceptions, overhead powerlines in Scotland require consent.

Proposals below these thresholds should be made to the relevant local planning authority. A list of local authorities is available from our planning website.

An application pack containing templates and useful information is available for developers.
