The Forum for Renewable Energy Development in Scotland (FREDS) is chaired by Jim Mather MSP, Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism. It has a key role to play in helping the Scottish Government achieve its 2020 target for renewable energy to generate the equivalent of 80% of gross annual electricity demand and in maximising the economic opportunities in the sector.
FREDS builds a partnership between industry, academia and Government which will enable Scotland to capitalise on its huge renewable energy resource and secure significant economic development opportunities for Scotland. By bringing together key stakeholders FREDS draws on their expertise, networks, and the numerous strands of activity in which they are engaged in order to most effectively develop Scotland's renewable energy industry.
FREDS has established a number of sub-groups individually tasked with looking at specific sectors, comprised of the Marine Energy Group, Biomass Energy Group (now closed), Future Generation Group (now closed), Skills Group, Hydrogen Energy Group, Renewable Heat Implementation Group, Community Renewables Implementation Group, and Micro Hydro Group. It is also linked to the Offshore Energy Programme Board and Energy Advisory Board, as illustrated in the following diagram.
