Initial enquiries about building and operating power stations and installing overhead power lines, should be made to Scottish Ministers. Enquiries are considered by Scottish Ministers where they are:
- in excess of 50 megawatts (MW) for onshore wind farms and power stations that are not wholly or mainly driven by water (such as coal/gas fired or nuclear plant);
- in excess of 1 MW for offshore wind farms and generating stations wholly or mainly driven by water (such as hydroelectric, wave or tidal generating stations); and
- with certain exceptions, overhead powerlines in Scotland require consent.
Proposals below these thresholds should be made to the relevant local planning authority. A list of local authorities is available from our planning website.
