Better Community Engagement

The resources in this section largely consist of very practical materials that can be used in training situations with a variety of target audiences. They comprise mainly of resources such as handouts, programmes and presentations.

Training for Community and Voluntary Groups / Activists

The general aim of training on community engagement with community groups such as Community Councils is to raise awareness of and explore issues and opportunities around engaging with public authorities and also engaging with their own communities. Various sessions have been designed and delivered with community groups over the course of the BCE programme and these materials reflect this work.

Training for public sector staff

Much of the focus of the BCE programme was in training staff in the public sector in improving their community engagement practice. The resources contained in this section were used as part of training programmes/ sessions for a range of staff in Local Authorities and other Community Planning partners.

  • Training staff as trainers. This covers nearly all of the BCE Curriculum Framework elements but is particularly relevant to supporting people and organisations to learn together. East Renfrewshire and Angus BCE local projects.

Planning Community Engagement

A focus for much of the training was in developing outcome-focused planning for community engagement. This section includes materials that will help practitioners identify need and set community engagement outcomes. The main BCE Curriculum Framework elements covered are; Working in partnership with agencies, organisations and communities, Recognising diversity and designing inclusive ways of working, Involving communities in planning services. Partnership Working in Community Engagement

Good community engagement is a collaborative process that involves a wide range of stakeholders in agreeing outcomes, planning for change, joint implementation of plans and collaborative review of practice. A key feature of the BCE programme was the collaborative nature of the process and the outputs. These materials reflect the kind of sessions that will prove useful for stakeholders when undertaking collaborative community engagement practice.

Participation and Involvement

Enabling practitioners to identify and develop relevant levels of involvement and methods of participation has been core to much of the BCE programme delivery as well as wider community engagement training. The resources in this section provide some useful starting points for exploring these topics with practitioners.

Resolving conflict and developing relationships

Developing good working relationships is a key part of community engagement and features in two of the BCE Curriculum Framework elements; negotiating with communities and partners; addressing conflicts and supporting change.

Community Empowerment

With an increasing interest in community empowerment the Edinburgh Partnership BCE local project organised an event to explore what this means for community engagement policy and practice. Core resources

Two core resources for developing and improving community engagement practice are the National Standards for Community Engagement and the VOiCE (Visioning Outcomes in Community Engagement) software. The materials in this section focus on how these frameworks can be used to inform and improve practice. They cover all of the BCE Curriculum Framework elements but are particularly useful for; Recognising diversity and designing inclusive ways of working.
