Appropriate Assessment
An Appropriate Assessment looks at the implications for nature conservation management of any proposed planning authority development in a 'Nautra 2000' site. Natura 2000 is the Europe-wide network of protected sites developed under the European Commission Habitats Directive (Directive 92/43/EEC) and the Birds Directive (79/409/EEC).
Policy summary
Appropriate Assessment is mandatory under the Habitats Directive which, in Scotland, is governed by The Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c.) Regulations 1994. The Habitats Directive also stipulates that an appropriate assessment is implemented for plans or projects proposed outwith the boundary of the designated area. If authorities are in any doubt as to the impact of a development, either inside or outwith a Natura 2000 site, they should consult SNH.
