Enforcement

Enforcement is the responsibility of local planning authorities and brings unauthorised development under control. Any unauthorised development or breach of planning permission should be dealt with quickly, efficiently and rigorously. For most enforcement queries, your local planning authority should be your first point of contact.

Policy summary

Planning enforcement should be appropriate to, and reflect the scale of, the breach of planning control. The key aims of enforcement are to;

  • Remedy the effects of unauthorised development
  • Bring unauthorised development under control

Enforcement Charters: each Planning Authority is required to produce an Enforcement Charter setting out their policies for planning enforcement and how the public can report suspected breaches.

Enforcement Registers: each Planning Authority is required to keep a register listing all formal enforcement action they have undertaken. The Register is open to inspection by the public.
