Designing Places Student Award

A key strand of our design policy is education and training. The Designing Places Student award is for urban design work that has been carried out as part of the curriculum on planning courses. The award is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate planning students and nominations can include a project, dissertation, essay or report.

2007 Award

There were 9 entries for 2007. They were assessed by the Judges: Gerry Grams (Design Champion, Glasgow City Council), Karen Cadell (Urban Designer, Cadell2) and the Scottish Government. Awards were presented at the ceremony on 13 March 2008.

Two commendations were made:

  • Comrie Colliery Masterplan: Heriot-Watt University.
The aim of this work was to prepare a masterplan for a new settlement on brownfield land in Fife, which had previously been used by the mining industry. The work was presented in a series of display boards which graphically showed the proposed masterplan and design details.
  • Scottish and Newcastle Brewary Site Design Brief : Heriot-Watt University.

The aim of this project was to produce a design brief for a major opportunity site on brownfield land near the centre of Edinburgh which could be used as supplementary planning guidance for developers, designers and planners.
