What Is Sustainable Housing?

We want all Scottish people to live in good quality, warm, comfortable homes. We want to improve the condition and energy efficiency of the homes that people live in.

How Are We Achieving This?

We provide support to local authorities to help them assist owners, landlords and tenants to improve the condition of their properties. We also provide support and financial assistance to individual homeowners, landlords and tenants to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

Improving Condition

Homes can only become more energy efficient if they are in a good state of repair.

Improving Energy Efficiency

Householders play a vital part in energy consumption and emissions reduction, according to research into consumer behaviour. Find out more about how you as an individual can help take steps to save energy.

Information about current funding schemes to help make our homes more energy efficient.

We are working with stakeholders to develop the best solutions to issues such as fuel poverty, reducing emissions and improving housing quality. We are working closely with the UK Department for Energy and Climate Change as it develops future GB-wide programmes such as the Green Deal and Energy Company Obligation.

We want to help those in fuel poverty and to help meet our challenging 2020 emissions targets we are developing a new climate change standard to reduce emissions from existing social housing.

We are supporting the development of greener homes through the Greener Homes Innovation Scheme and the production of a Greener Homes Prospectus which showcases current Scottish examples. We are also supporting innovation and entrepreneurship through our sponsorship of two Saltire Foundation Fellowships.

We are supporting the development of the Warm Homes Fund in Scotland by looking at additional mechanisms that could increase the overall scale of investment.
