Housing Improvements and Repair Grants

Introduction

Improvement and Repair Grants are available from local authorities to help ensure that everyone has a home that meets the Tolerable Standard, is suitable for their needs and in a good state of repair. Responsibility for maintaining private housing lies first with the owner, but grants are available to help those who do not have sufficient resources to do this.

If you want to apply for a grant, you must contact your local authority. It is up to the council to decide whether to give a grant in each individual case, taking into account local priorities and other demands on its resources.

The legislation relating to Improvement and Repair Grants is contained in the Housing (Scotland) Act 1987, which was amended by the Housing (Scotland) Act 2001. These changes came into force from 1 October 2003.

This website contains general information for homeowners about grants, guidance for local authorities, and the documents which led up to the development of the new grants system.
