Technical Handbooks

The Technical Handbooks provide guidance on achieving the standards set in the Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004 and are available in two volumes, Domestic buildings and Non-domestic buildings.

The 2013 Edition of the Technical Handbooks are now available to view or download. As intimated in 2010, a hardcopy of these documents will not be made available. These handbooks provide revised guidance and support the Building (Miscellaneous Amendments) (Scotland) Regulations 2013 which were laid before Parliament on 13 May 2013. The amended regulations and technical guidance are scheduled to come into force on 1 October 2013. Through the same amendment regulations, changes are also made to the Building (Procedure) (Scotland) Regulations 2004 and the Building (Forms) (Scotland) Regulations 2005.

A summary guide providing details on the main changes introduced to the mandatory standards and associated guidance for 2013 has been published. The changes involve Sections 0, 2, 3, 4 and 7 of the Technical Handbooks.

The previous editions, can be accessed in the tables below. The 2011 Technical Handbooks came into force on the 3 October 2011.  Hard copies of the 2010 handbook can be ordered through 'The Stationery Office'. The handbooks published prior to 2009 came into force on the May 1 of the respective year.  Referenced Key Documents (refered to within Technical Handbooks, can be found immediately after each section on the list below)

These guides are updated version of Annexes A, B ,and C of the 2006 Technical handbooks. It is intended as a reference document for use with the 2007 Technical handbooks. The guides relate to both domestic and non-domestic buildings.

These guides are designed to give examples of some common construction methods but there are likely to be other solutions which will be more suited to a particular project. It should also be noted that there is commercially available software for undertaking U-value calculations, which is now the most usual method of calculation. Also, manufacturers of building products are usually able to assist with calculations for particular cases.
