Introduction

The following pages set out the plant health control measures which apply to the production of potatoes in Scotland, particularly ware potatoes. All stages of seed potato production are managed uner the Seed Potato Classification Scheme, administered by SASA, and this includes measures to prevent and control diseases. These pages provide information on a number of specific pests and disease, the requirement for notification of ware potato crops planted and of potatoes brought into Scotland from elsewhere, and general controls which all potato growers should be aware of.

The Plant Health (Potatoes) (Scotland) Order 2006 came into force on 1 July 2006. The Order provides the SG with the power to demand:

  • the notification of all potatoes for planting (Please download a copy of Form PP1 to notify plantings)
  • the compulsory destruction of the haulm of virus affected potato crops; and
  • the treatment of potato dumps for potato blight

Scotland enjoys an enviable reputation as a producer of quality seed and ware potatoes and the provisions contained in the order will help maintain Scotland's high plant health status in this area by strengthening the SG's ability to respond to threats which could undermine it.

In addition to these provisions, SG is extending Regulation 6 of the Seed Potatoes (Scotland) Regulations 2000 to farm-saved seed potatoes. This latter provision will regulate the contact between farm-saved seed potatoes and any non-related ware potatoes. To apply for exemption under Regulation 6(3)(b) of the Regulations please download the application form for exemption.

Notification of these potato provisions has been sent to all potato growers in Scotland (copied to trade organisations and other interested parties for information) to advise them of these important developments.
