Bluetongue: Scottish slaughterhouses designated to receive susceptible livestock from the bluetongue protection zone
Designation of Slaughterhouses
Bluetongue susceptible animals sourced within the bluetongue protection zone for movement to slaughterhouses in Scotland will only be permitted if the slaughterhouse is designated by Scottish Ministers. This decision was based on a Veterinary Risk Assessment. Their movement will also need to meet the terms of the Defra general movement licence EXD464(BT)(in force from 1 September 2008).
Slaughterhouses in Scotland are able to apply to the Scottish Government to be designated to receive livestock from the bluetongue protection zone ( PZ) in England and Wales. The application was revised on 9 September 2008 to take into consideration changes to cleansing and disinfection requirements. The latest version of the application form can be downloaded or a copy can be obtain from the slaughterhouse Official Veterinarian.
The Scottish Government's position on designations will be kept under review, particularly in terms of any changes to the disease situation.
