ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE STRATEGY ADVISORY GROUP

PROGRESS AGAINST THE TWELVE PRIORITY DISEASES

Introduction

1. The purpose of the Advisory Group is to advise on the implementation of the GB Animal Health and Welfare Strategy in Scotland. Under this strategy, 12 target diseases have been prioritised for action here. This paper updates the group on the diseases, their incidence, targets for reduction and progress so far

Background

2. Attached to this paper is a one-page table showing the position with each of the 12 diseases, sorted by sector. As the group will know, we have been tackling the diseases on a sectoral basis and working in tandem with industry, building on their structures where possible. We intend to update the baselines in the spring.

Next Steps

3. We would like the group to consider how best to make progress against the priority diseases and to comment on the direction at present. In particular, we would like the group to consider;

  • Is the sectoral approach right?
  • Are there information sources we're not accessing?
  • Are there new technological factors in testing for or treating these diseases that should be considered?
