Costs and Benefits of Endemic Disease Control

The Animal Health and Welfare Strategy highlights the importance of understanding the costs imposed by disease and the associated costs and benefits of their control. Reflecting this, the Scottish Government commissioned the Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) to review existing work on Costs and Benefits to facilitate a discussion of where gaps exist.

This work highlighted a lack of consistency between the methods used in previous studies. By way of addressing this gap an outline project proposal 'Modelling Sheep Diseases to Assess Economic Impacts' has been submitted by SAC to the LINK Sustainable Livestock Programme. The Scottish Government is supporting this work and will provide additional financial assistance. This project will complement the short term studies commissioned by Defra on case studies and best practice and provide support in taking forward Animal Health Planning.
