EU Animal By-Products

The new EU Animal By-Products Regulation (1774/2002), came into force on 1 October 2003, and among other measures prohibits burial of fallen stock on-farm, except in remote areas (i.e. parts of the Highlands and Islands where there is no collection service).

At the moment the majority of fallen stock adult bovines are currently uplifted free of charge under BSE testing programme.

National Fallen Stock Collection Service

The Scottish Executive, in conjunction with the other UK Agricultural Departments, aims to have a low cost collection service in place as soon as possible. In a joint announcement on 24 February, the Fallen Stock Company Board and UK Agricultural Ministers said that this would now be in Autumn 2004 .

Approved Premises

Premises approved under the Animal-By Products Order 1999 continue to be approved from 1 October 2003 under the Animal By-Products (Scotland) Regulations 2003. These blanket approvals generally apply in the short term by which time further inspections will have been carried out by the Department. Attached is a range of premises involved.
