Pesticide Application

Application of Herbicides, Pesticides, Lime and Fertiliser

4.1 The General Environmental Conditions protect habitats listed at paragraph 3.1 from potentially damaging applications of herbicides, pesticides, lime and fertiliser (including farmyard manure and slurry).

4.2 It is recognised that the applicant will be under a legal obligation to remove scheduled weeds. Please see paragraphs 5.1 to 5.5..

4.3 Other herbicide application or methods of application and the use of other chemicals to control bracken require prior written approval from the local SEERAD Office.

4.4 In all cases of aerial application consultation should take place with SNH and, in the case of public water supply catchments, the water authorities. If the application is to be made within 250 metres of any water the applicant is legally obliged to notify SEPA and provide a copy of the notification. See Appendix IX for CONDITIONS RELATING TO THE AERIAL APPLICATION OF ASULAM FOR BRACKEN CONTROL UNDER THE RURAL STEWARDSHIP SCHEME.

4.5 It is recognised that in some circumstances application of lime and a low level of fertiliser may enhance (or at least not reduce) the conservation interest of such areas. Under such circumstances lime and low levels of fertiliser application may be permitted with prior written approval. Local guidelines should be agreed with SNH for such practices.

4.6 Applications of farmyard manure and slurry may be permitted with prior written approval from the local SEERAD Office. As above, guidelines should be agreed with SNH.
