Research Activity
Research activity needs to be focused on practical
management techniques, their efficacy and the optimisation
of knowledge transfer and the Executive supports this
need.

Two projects are concerned with Climate Change and
Organic Soils:
- a review of contribution to climate change
(through greenhouse gas emissions) of fertiliser use in
Scotland on different soil types and through different
application methods. The project will commence on 1st
July 2003 and the final report is due on 30 April 2004.
(It is expected to cost £30k).
- the development of a model to simulate carbon and
nitrogen dynamics in
organic soils and predict response of
these soils to land use and climate change. The Welsh
Assembly will be contributing £60k to the project cost
which will be between £410k and £510k over 3
years.
