Introduction

Land Management Contracts

The concept of Land Management Contracts ( LMCs) was outlined in A Forward Strategy for Scottish Agriculture, which was launched in June 2001. A Partnership for a Better Scotland commits the executive to introducing Land Management Contracts.

Following the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy ( CAP), the opportunity arose to advance the concept of LMCs using modulation funding.

Work recommenced with the Land Management Contract Working Group ( LMCWG) to develop the menu scheme as the first step to introducing the full approach from 2007. Further work on development of LMCs is ongoing.

The consultation "Land Management Contracts: Menu Scheme", which closed on 3 September 2004, sought views on proposals for the initial shape of the scheme and the timing of its introduction.

A Summary of Responses is now available from this consultation.

The findings, along with stakeholder input, helped shape proposals which await approval from the European Commission. If approved, the menu scheme will be introduced from 2005.

Earlier work of the LMCWG included an initial report, modelling work and development of the next steps.
