Action 47
"Projects will be developed in the proposed National
Park areas to find new approaches to land management which
are tailored to local priorities. These will be driven by
the ideas of local farmers and other stakeholders,
integrating the needs of land managers, the environment,
and the wider rural economy."
Progress
The Executive appointed consultants in January 2002 to
undertake a study examining new directions for land
management schemes in Scotland's national parks. Their
report was published in February 2003. The National Park
Authorities hosted feedback meetings to explain the results
of the report to those who had participated in the study
and have undertaken initiatives to help implement the
priorities outlined in the report. Initiatives include
investigating the logistics of local food branding and
marketing schemes and working towards integrating land
management schemes.
The Cairngorms National Park Authority is organising
seminars to determine the wishes of both land managers and
the public in the delivery of public benefits. This
information will be used to start trials of specific
measures which will fill gaps in existing schemes, fit with
Land Management Contracts and also meet National Park aims.
The Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority
has established a multi-agency working group bringing
together local representatives of all the key agencies
providing support for land management activities. National
Park Plans (as required under the National Parks (Scotland)
Act 2000) will also bring stakeholders together to address
other issues identified in the Report.
Future Developments
The National Park Authorities will be meeting with the
Executive to discuss proposals for a Land Management
Contacts scheme to ensure their work programmes operate in
a co-ordinated way.
Action complete although work is ongoing in
relation to the overarching objective.
