Action 45

Action 45

"The farming, food and environment sectors must work together to identify new ways of protecting and enhancing our environment while ensuring the competitiveness of our farming businesses."

Progress

There are a number of different initiatives being taken forward which contribute to this action. Examples are given below.

Targeted Inputs for a Better Rural Environment (TIBRE) is an initiative by Scottish Natural Heritage which aims to show how technology can be used in farming to benefit the environment. The TIBRE Arable Handbook was launched in 1997 and distributed to over 800 Scottish farmers. The most up to date version is available via the link given below. It contains concise information and advice about 40 products and developments which, if adopted singly or in combination, are likely to improve the environmental profile of the farm.

Two key products set up under the auspices of A National Strategy for Farm Business Advice and Skills also contribute to this Action namely, the FarmBASS Whole Farm Review scheme and the FarmBASS Local Initiatives Fund. See Action 1, Action 2 and Action 3 for further details.

Action now rests with farmers themselves to take advantage of the opportunities available.
