Action 43

"The Prevention of Environmental Pollution from Agricultural Activities (PEPFAA) Code, which offers practical guidance on farming in ways which minimise risk to the environment, will be reviewed by a team which includes a farming industry representative. This should allow the review to make use of practical farming experience and to consider how best to promote the messages of the Code within the farming community."

Progress

The Scottish Agriculture Pollution Group (SAPG) (whose membership comprises representatives from SEERAD, the Scottish Agricultural College, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and NFU Scotland) produced in 2002 the PEPFAA DOs and DON'Ts Guide, which was issued to all agricultural businesses in Scotland. This Guide gives practical advice on how to prevent agricultural pollution in an easy to understand format.

SAPG have also prepared a draft revision of the full PEPFAA Code, last published in 1997. This full Code will add detail to the messages contained in the DOs and DON'Ts Guide. It is being aimed principally at farmers and agricultural contractors who want to know what lies behind the Guide and will provide useful background for industry and environmental advisers, as well as those who wish to use the Code as an educational tool. In preparing the revised version of the Code, consultation has taken place with industry and environmental interests. Farmers' Focus Groups have been held to evaluate the Code's contents.

Recent legislative developments necessitated a further review by SAPG to ensure that the revised PEPFAA Code will reflect - as much as possible - the current legislative position.

The revised version of the Code is expected in March 2005. A revise of the DOs and DON'Ts Guide is expected at the same time. As with the previous edition, that will be issued to all agricultural businesses in Scotland.
