Action 42

"As part of its remit, the Working Group will be asked to review existing advice and recommend how we can ensure simple, consistent advice which offers, wherever possible, cost-effective solutions which can be implemented by farmers themselves. This work will identify the main centres of expertise and look at how everyone, farmers and regulators alike, can have access to it."

Progress

Key outcomes from A National Strategy for Farm Business Advice and Skills are the Whole Farm Review Scheme, the Farm Business Adviser Accreditation Scheme and benchmarking initiatives. The Whole Farm Review includes business, environmental and skills audits; an integrated SWOT analysis identifying the key opportunities and threats facing the farm business; and an action plan suggesting practical measures to improve business and environmental performance. The progress reports under Action 1 and Action 2 provide further information.

The framework needed by farmers and their business advisers to assess skills needs is now in place and SEERAD will continue to encourage the industry to make use of them. Farmers now need to grasp those opportunities as part of their future business development.

The Working Group is content with this development.
