This is a consultation on a Bill to introduce same sex marriage and the religious and belief registration of civil partnership.
The Bill includes protections so that religious and belief bodies do not have to take part, unless they choose to opt in.
The Bill also proposes general changes to marriage law. These include, for example, civil ceremonies taking place anywhere (other than religious premises) and the establishment of "belief" ceremonies (eg humanists) as a third way of getting married in Scotland.
The consultation also discusses issues in relation to freedom of speech and in relation to education.
This consultation is now closed. We will publish an analysis of responses later this year. Please see www.scotland.gov.uk/samesex for more information.
