Scottish Health Survey topic report examining methods of measuring obesity and the factors associated with obesity in Scotland

Executive Summary

The first part of the report investigated which was the most appropriate measure of obesity and overweight available in the SHeS.

For determining prevalence of overweight and obesity, the WHO combined measure was more specific than BMI>=25 and reduced classification bias. For determining obesity, BMI>=30 was found to be the most appropriate measure.

The second part of the report used regression analysis to determine the factors associated with overweight and obesity.

Variables related to energy expenditure (physical activity, sedentary behaviour) were strongly associated with obesity, independent of socio-economic and dietary factors.
