SCOTTISH ANNUAL BUSINESS STATISTICS 2007
Scottish Annual Business Statistics for 2007 are released today. The statistics provide financial data for businesses in Scotland. The statistics are available at:
http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Statistics/16170/4363
Scottish Annual Business Statistics includes detailed data on employees, turnover, gross value added, labour costs and other financial data. Data are shown by industry sector and local authority area. The figures are based on corresponding data for the UK published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on 30 July 2009.
These figures cover approximately two thirds of the economy. The main sectors not covered are the financial sector and some of the public sector. These statistics are therefore best suited to the analysis of individual industries rather than the economy as a whole. The main points are as follows:
- The latest figures show an increase in turnover between 2006 and 2007 in manufacturing, construction and services sectors. Whilst construction and services increased gross value added (GVA) between 2006 and 2007, manufacturing sector showed a slight fall.
- Since 2006, the main sectors saw the following changes in Turnover: Services increased by £3,833m (4%), Manufacturing increased by £935m (2%) and Construction increased by £832m (6%).
- Since 2006, the main sectors saw the following changes in Gross Value Added (GVA): Services increased by £428m (1%), Manufacturing decreased by £160m (-1%) and Construction increased by £336m (6%).
- In 2007, the largest contribution to gross value added within manufacturing came from the food & drink industry (£3 billion). Within services, the largest contribution (£10 billion) was made by 'other business activities', a sector which includes legal activities, architectural & engineering activities, labour recruitment and advertising.
- In 2007, GVA per employee in manufacturing (£61,300) was over twice as high as that in services sector (£29,500). Whilst labour costs per employee in manufacturing (£28,900) were nearly 50% higher than in services (£19,500). The lower levels found in services partly reflects the higher level of part time working in this sector.
- In 2007, within manufacturing, foreign-owned companies accounted for 28 per cent of employees and 32 per cent of GVA. Within services, foreign-owned companies accounted for 13 per cent of employees and 19 per cent of GVA.
- In 2007, the local authority areas contributing most to total gross value added within the manufacturing sector were Falkirk (13%), Glasgow City (11%) and Fife (7%). Within the service sector, the highest contributing authorities were Glasgow City (16%), Aberdeen City and Edinburgh City (both 15%).
