  • Exports of food and drink overseas increased between the years of 2002 and 2007 from £3,170 million to £4,970 million respectively. This was mainly due to increase in manufactured drink exports.
  • Both agriculture and fishing exports fell during the same period.

  • Exports of food and drink to the rest of the UK increased between the years of 2002 and 2007 from £3,295 million to £4,555 million.
  • The increase came from rises in agriculture, wholesale and manufactured food and drink exports. Fishing was the only sector that experienced a decrease in exports.

  • Food and drink exports to the rest of the UK account for 47.8% of all Scottish exports of food and drink.
  • More manufactured drink is exported overseas than to the rest of the UK, 44.7% compared to 12.8% respectively. More manufactured food is exported to the rest of the UK than overseas, 18.3% compared to 4.6% respectively.

  • The EU27 region was the biggest market for Scottish overseas food and drink exports in 2007, accounting for 38.6% of the total.
  • North America and Asia each accounted for 20.5% and 15.2% respectively.

  • 20 countries accounted for 72.8% of all Scottish food and drink exports overseas.
  • The US was the biggest buyer of Scottish food and drink produce, accounting for the 15.9% of the total overseas exports. France and Spain were the next two biggest markets, purchasing 10.1% and 8.4% each.

  • 44% of all Scottish processors' output is sold within Scotland. A further 46% is sold in the rest of the UK, whilst the remaining 15% is exported to the rest of the world.
  • The dairy sector sells predominantly within the UK, whilst the drinks sector focuses largely on non- UK markets, with 42% of its produce sold abroad.
