Mineral dredging in harbour areas
8. Previous consultations confirmed that there has been little interest in commercial mineral extraction in Scottish waters to date with only two extant dredging licenses in the Firth of Forth and Tay Estuary. The license in the Firth of Forth is within an area that falls within the jurisdiction of Forth Ports Authority. The existing license was granted by the Scottish Ministers under previous Government View procedures following an assessment of the environmental acceptability of the proposed dredging operations. Although the provisions of both the EIA and Habitats Directive were applied in the informal Government View procedures, formal legislative procedures are required to ensure that future dredging proposals in harbour areas are fully compliant with EC law.
