TOTAL PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR EMPLOYMENT IN SCOTLAND
Headcount
- In quarter 4 (Q4) 2008, there were 579,300 people employed in the public sector. This includes employment in local government, core Scottish Government, Scottish Government Agencies, Non Ministerial Departments and devolved public bodies in Scotland as well as employment in UK Government Departments and UK wide public bodies with a presence in Scotland.
- There were 1,950,600 people employed in the private sector in Scotland.
- Total public sector employment has increased by 46,400 (8.7%) since Q4 1999 and increased by 1,200 (0.2%) since Q4 2007.
- Total public sector employment currently accounts for 22.9% of total employment in Scotland. This has decreased from 23.1% in Q4 1999 and increased from 22.7% in Q4 2007.
