2. Overview of Prize and Competition

2.1 The Saltire Prize Challenge was launched by Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond on 2 December 2008. The challenge underpinning the prize is as follows:

The Saltire Prize will be awarded to the team that can demonstrate in Scottish waters a commercially viable wave or tidal energy technology that achieves a minimum electrical output of 100 GWh over a continuous 2 year period using only the power of the sea and is judged to be the best overall technology after consideration of cost, environmental sustainability and safety.

2.2 The Competition will be open to full applications when the Guidelines have been finalised, taking account of the responses received to this consultation paper. The full application packs will be available by 30 June 2009.

2.3 The diagram below highlights the proposed Competition model. This sets out the process following the consultation period with full application forms being available from June 2009 when the guidelines are finalised. A Grand Challenge period during which competitors will demonstrate power output will commence on 1 January 2010 and run through to December 2014.
