Appendix A - Summary of Geographies

Communities Scotland HMA boundaries

Aberdeen HMA

Major HMA that includes Aberdeen City plus a significant proportion of Aberdeenshire including, Aboyne, Laurencekirk and Inverurie. However, does not extend as far as Huntly, Peterhead, Fraserburgh, or Banff.

Greater Dundee HMA

Major HMA that has Dundee as its core, but extends into Angus, Fife and Perth and Kinross administrative areas

Greater Edinburgh HMA

Major HMA centred on Edinburgh and the Lothians but extending into Fife and the Scottish Borders.

Includes two overlap areas - Bo'ness, which falls within the Falkirk HMA and the southern end of the Perth HMA

Greater Glasgow HMA

Major HMA based on the core area of Glasgow, East Renfrewshire, and East Dunbartonshire, but extending into much of North and South Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, and West Dunbartonshire.

Also includes areas of overlap with towns in East Ayrshire (Stewarton etc), Argyll and Bute (Helensburgh) and the eastern fringe of Inverclyde

Inverness HMA

Centred on City of Inverness and extending to:

  • Nairn and the Inner Moray Firth area to the east
  • Achnasheen in the West,
  • Cromarty and Dingwall to the north (but not Alness, Tain or Invergordon)

Fort Augustus in the South Does not extend across any administrative boundaries

Perth HMA

Local HMA based on Perth and its hinterland. the southern end of the HMA is subject to some influence from the Edinburgh HMA whilst its Eastern fringe joins onto to and comprises a small area of overall with the Dundee HMA

Stirling HMA

Major HMA based around Stirling and its hinterland but extends into Clackmannanshire.

Falkirk HMA

Local HMA largely coterminous with the administrative boundary for Falkirk LA but includes an area of overlap with Edinburgh HMA

Inverclyde HMA

Local HMA based on a number of older urban settlements, although area around Kilmacolm acts as a commuting area for the Greater Glasgow HMA.

Ayr HMA

Expanding HMA based on the towns of Ayr, Prestwick and Troon at its centre that has expanded into parts of East Ayrshire

Kilmarnock

Local HMA based around Kilmarnock and surrounding settlements but not extending as far south as the Cumnock Valley

Irvine HMA

Local HMA based on the administrative town of Irvine and the neighbouring settlements
