1. Fee loans were introduced for new students studying outside Scotland in the rest of the UK in 2006-2007. Students receiving fee loans are included under 'fees'.
2. Student loan entitlement is calculated by SAAS but the Student Loans Company extends the loan. These figures relate to entitlement rather than uptake which may be lower. Prior to 1999/00 students applied for a loan through their institution.
3. Student numbers have been rounded up or down to the nearest 5 (e.g. 1, 2 round to 0; 3, 4 round to 5). Totals may not equal the sum of their constituent parts due to this rounding.

20. Table 11 shows students in receipt of awards, fees and entitled to maintenance loans and amounts paid out in 2007-2008 by institution type and location. The majority of support, irrespective of institution location, is paid to students studying at HEIs (73.7% of awards, 83.3% of fees and 74.0% of loans). Of the £458.6 million paid out in support by SAAS in 2007-2008:
- £437.1 million (95.3%) went to students studying at an institution in Scotland
- £354.9 million (77.4%) was spent supporting students at HEIs.
