SCOTTISH SCHOOL LEAVERS SURVEY - SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT PUBLICATION NOTE
1. The Scottish Government announced today that following careful consideration of the purpose and use of the Scottish School Leavers Survey (SSLS), the current suspension of the survey would be extended indefinitely.
2. The SSLS has been part of the Scottish education evidence base in one form or another since the 1970s and has been used to inform a range of valuable analyses on the journeys taken by young people as they leave compulsory education. However, it has become increasingly clear in recent years that the use of the survey has been substantially undermined by the high levels of interviewee drop-out. In the last complete SSLS only 14% of those approached to participate as 17 year olds were still in the survey 7 years later. This clearly has significant impact on the ability of the survey to measure change over time, to be representative of the population, and critically for the Scottish Government, to tell us about those groups who are not making successful or positive progress as young adults.
3. The Scottish Government is working with partners to develop the information and evidence necessary to support and monitor the implementation of policy and the delivery of services for young people.
