Conclusions

During the last year we have continued to see an increase in both the volume and the complexity of cases submitted to us. Even so, our productivity has continued to increase so that we have again met our Ministerial targets. I am grateful to all of those who have worked hard to make this happen. Over the coming year I expect to see further improvements with appeal cases determined even more quickly as we reap the rewards of the introduction of succinct decision notices.

Work is also underway to refine our business processes in preparation for the introduction of new appeal procedures during 2009. To support the reforms introduced by the 2006 Planning Act we will also be publishing our case files electronically. This will provide greater access and transparency and we look forward to working constructively with all parts of the industry to maximise the benefits of internet publication.

Finally, a number of our experienced reporters are due to retire during the next 12 months. While we will undoubtedly miss their significant contribution I believe that they leave the Directorate well placed to grasp the exciting opportunities ahead and to continue to deliver the reforms that Ministers seek.
