Notes:
Centres were asked whether they provide pre-school education "following the Scottish 3-5 curriculum". Those that said yes were asked whether this was "as a local authority managed school or centre", "as a partner provider offering places funded by the local authority" or "neither".
Centres that did not respond to the census but that were still registered with the Care Commission and were listed in the pre-school teacher census of September 2007 as providing pre-school education are included in this table (102 centres).
There has been a change in the way in which data on the headcount of GTCS Registered Teachers is collected. In previous years the headcount included teachers who worked on a peripatetic basis or were shared with other centres and may have counted them at each centre they worked. In this table the figures in columns 1 to 3 which are headcounts exclude peripatetic teachers. As a result the headcount figures in this years publication are not directly comparable with previous years.
Teachers are counted once for each centre they work for, so the number of teachers contains some double-counting. However, each centre calculates the teacher's WTE as the time they spend working in that centre, so WTE should not be double-counted.
420 centres did not provide information on the number of teachers. For these centres, the median number for all other centres has been applied, broken down by centre type. 892 centres did not provide information on the WTE of staff. For these centres, the mean ratio of staff numbers to WTE has been applied, broken down by type of provision and local authority.
Teacher numbers are rounded to the nearest 5 and WTEs to the nearest whole number to express the uncertainty inherent in these estimates. For this reason, totals may not exactly equal the sum of their parts.
